Stainless steel is a hard and strong substance, it is also magnetic and retains its strength. Stainless steel is a form of steel that contains chromium, which is resistant to tarnishing and rust. There is a thin layer of oxide on the surface which is called the “passive layer”, this layer prevents any corrosion on the surface. Stainless steel comes in all shapes and sizes, and there is so much that you can make with steel.

Stainless steel contains varies amount of carbon, silicon and manganese, to increase the corrosion resistance, nickel and molybdenum may be added. The main component of stainless steel is iron mixed with carbon to produce steel pipes

There are more than 150 grades of steel, but only 15 are used regularly.

5 types of stainless steel

You can do so much with stainless steel and there are many types of stainless steel, here are the 5 main ones:

Ferritic – Contains 30% chromium crystal structure. This type of steel lacks in high-temperature properties.

Martensitic – This type of steel is a mixture of carbon and 18% chromium. It can be hardened by heat treatments; this is less corrosion resistant.

Precipitation – This is hardening stainless steel and contains nickel and chromium, this type of steel is very strong.

Austenitic – Formed by using manganese, nickel and nitrogen. This type of steel is touch and ductile with high temperature strength properties.

Duplex – This is a combination of austenite and ferrite crystal structure. Its main components include chromium and nickel, which makes it corrosion resistant.
